Standards-Based Grading in Highline

Standards-Based Grading in Highline

Highline uses Standards-Based Grading (SBG) as part of our instructional approach. This grading system focuses on measuring each student's progress toward clearly defined learning goals, based on the state standards set by Washington State.

Unlike traditional grading, standards-based grading does not include behavior or the amount of time it takes a student to learn a concept. Instead, it reflects how well a student understands and demonstrates the knowledge and skills outlined in the standards.

Grading is not based on behavior or how long it takes to demonstrate learning. The grade is based on how close your student meets the learning goals. It may take students the entire unit or course meet a standard.

To help families and students better understand this approach, our grading web section includes:

  • Commonly used SBG words
  • A rubric, the tool teachers use to monitor student progress
  • Assignment types
  • Benefits of SBG
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Resources for supporting students

Learn how SBG helps support meaningful learning for every student.
